October 7, 2016LTEMP FEIS Is PublishedThe Long-Term Experimental and Management Plan (LTEMP) Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) is now available for downloading or viewing on this website. The FEIS updated text based on cooperating agency input and public comments on the DEIS received during the 122-day public comment period. The Department of the Interior will not issue a final decision on the proposed action for a minimum of 30 days after the date that the Environmental Protection Agency publishes its Notice of Availability of Weekly Receipt of Environmental Impact Statements in the Federal Register. After the 30-day public review period, the Department of the Interior will complete a Record of Decision (ROD). The ROD will state the action that will be implemented and discuss all factors leading to that decision. March 18, 2016LTEMP DEIS Comment Period Extended to May 9, 2016In response to several requests for an extension, the Department of the Interior, through the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) and the National Park Service (NPS), is extending the public comment period for the Glen Canyon Dam Long-Term Experimental and Management Plan (LTEMP) Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS). The public comment period for the DEIS was originally scheduled to end on Thursday, April 7, 2016, but has been extended to May 9, 2016. Reclamation and the NPS will accept comments that are received or postmarked by that date. A Federal Register notice of the extension will be published in the near future. January 8, 2016LTEMP DEIS Now Available for Public ReviewThe Long-Term Experimental and Management Plan (LTEMP) Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) is now available for downloading or viewing on this website. Reclamation and NPS invite the public and other interested parties to provide comments on the DEIS as described on the Getting Involved page. Public meetings will be held in February and March 2016 to present an overview of the findings of the LTEMP DEIS and allow the public to ask questions about the DEIS. The comment period ends on April 7, 2016. For more information, see the Notice of Availability, press release, and Executive Summary available below. April 21, 2014LTEMP EIS AlternativesSix alternatives, including the No-Action Alternative, have been developed for consideration in the Glen Canyon Dam Long-Term Experimental and Management Plan (LTEMP) Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The alternatives represent different ways Glen Canyon Dam could be operated under the LTEMP over the next 20 years, and will serve as the basis of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) assessment to be presented in the LTEMP EIS. At the February 20, 2014, Adaptive Management Working Group (AMWG) Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, the LTEMP EIS team presented an overview of the alternatives. This presentation and a description of these alternatives can be downloaded using the links below. Although these are subject to change as the NEPA process continues, they are being provided now as an update to interested members of the public.
November 28, 2012Public Presentation Originally Scheduled for August 22-23 PostponedThe public presentation on alternatives that was previously scheduled for August 22-23, 2012, in Flagstaff, Arizona, has been postponed. Information on the presentation will be posted on this website as soon as it is available. September 18, 2012Public Input Received on LTEMP EIS AlternativesThe Bureau of Reclamation and the National Park Service extended an opportunity for members of the public to provide input on LTEMP EIS alternatives after preliminary alternative concepts were published in a newsletter on March 30, 2012, and the agencies hosted a public workshop on alternatives in Flagstaff, Arizona on April 4 and 5, 2012. Input was received from the Basin States (consisting of the seven Colorado River Basin states and the Upper Colorado River Commission), the Colorado River Energy Distributors Association (CREDA), the Grand Canyon Trust, and the Irrigation and Electrical Districts Association of Arizona (IEDA). The LTEMP joint-lead agencies are reviewing this material and using it to inform development of alternatives to be considered in the LTEMP EIS. July 23, 2012Public Presentation Originally Scheduled for August 22-23 PostponedThe public presentation that was previously scheduled for August 22-23, 2012, in Flagstaff, Arizona, has been postponed until the early fall. The revised dates will be posted on this website as soon as they are determined. July 23, 2012LTEMP EIS Public Involvement Plan ReleasedThe Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) and the National Park Service (NPS) have developed a Public Involvement Plan to fulfill and exceed the public involvement requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the Council on Environmental Quality regulations implementing NEPA. Both Reclamation and NPS highly value public participation and strive to encourage public participation in the NEPA process. This Plan is designed to establish a process that maximizes public participation and information at the same time it creates opportunities for stakeholders and members of the interested public to provide input throughout the environmental analysis process.
May 29, 2012Salazar Announces Improvements to Glen Canyon Dam OperationsSecretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced on May 23 that, as part of the Glen Canyon Dam Adaptive Management Program, the Bureau of Reclamation has approved two long-term research and experimental programs of high-flow releases and native fish protection to preserve and improve the Grand Canyon and its resources. May 11, 2012Reclamation and NPS Announce Current Schedule for the LTEMP EISThe Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) and the National Park Service have announced the current schedule for drafting the Glen Canyon Dam Long Term Experimental and Management Plan Environmental Impact Statement (LTEMP EIS). This schedule is intended to help interested parties plan for key involvement periods. The letter announcing the schedule is available in PDF format below.
April 17, 2012Public Meeting Held in Flagstaff to Discuss Preliminary LTEMP AlternativesMembers of the public participated in a two-day meeting on alternatives being considered for inclusion in the LTEMP EIS. The meeting was held on April 4 and 5, 2012 at the High Country Conference Center in Flagstaff, Arizona. A call-in number was provided for those unable to attend in person. Over 70 people attended the meeting, including members of the public, stakeholders, and project staff from Reclamation, NPS, and Argonne National Laboratory. April 17, 2012Web-based Public Meetings Were Held to Discuss LTEMP Scoping ReportTwo Web-based meetings were held on March 27, 2012 to provide a summary of public comments on the scope of the LTEMP EIS. A total of about 30 people participated in the meetings. Staff from Reclamation, NPS, and Argonne National Laboratory presented a slide-show overview of public scoping comments. Members of the public were afforded the opportunity to ask questions about the scoping process and other aspects of the project. March 19, 2012LTEMP EIS Upcoming Public Meeting to Discuss AlternativesThe public is invited to participate in a two-day meeting on alternatives being considered for inclusion in the LTEMP EIS. The meeting will be held on April 4 and 5, 2012 in Flagstaff, AZ. The preliminary draft alternatives being considered for evaluation will be presented and discussed at this meeting hosted by the Bureau of Reclamation and the National Park Service. The public will be able to watch a live overview of the Scoping Report, and will have an opportunity to ask questions of technical experts and managers involved in the EIS. November 28, 2011LTEMP EIS Public Scoping Period Extended to January 31, 2012In response to several requests from interested parties for an extension, the Department of the Interior, through the Bureau of Reclamation and the National Park Service, is extending the public scoping period for the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for Adoption of a Long-Term Experimental and Management Plan for the Operation of Glen Canyon Dam. The public scoping period will now run through January 31, 2012, and Reclamation and the NPS will accept comments that are received or postmarked by that date. A Federal Register notice of the extension will be published in the near future. October 17, 2011Glen Canyon Dam Long-Term Experimental and Management Plan EIS Web Site LaunchedThe Glen Canyon Dam Long-Term Experimental and Management Plan (LTEMP) Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Web site was launched October 17, 2011 at http://ltempeis.anl.gov. This Web site is the online center for public information about the LTEMP EIS. The Department of the Interior, through the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) and the National Park Service (NPS), will prepare a Draft EIS for the adoption of a long-term experimental and management plan for the operation of Glen Canyon Dam. The EIS will fully evaluate dam operations and will provide the basis for decisions that identify management actions and experimental options that will provide a framework for adaptively managing Glen Canyon Dam operations over the next 15 to 20 years.
